How to Polish Chalked Fiberglass

Many things, such as boats, planes and showers, are constructed from fiberglass. This durable, lightweight material is generally painted with gel coat. The thick paint consists of a high-quality fiberglass resin pigmented with color. This type of fiberglass paint has additives that protect the fiberglass from ultraviolet rays and a liquid wax that allows the gel coat to harden and have a glossy finish. Years of sun exposure will oxidize the gel coat, drying it out and leaving a chalky finish. Oxidation can be removed and shine returned to the gel coat using common products from a marine supply store.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a pair of rubber gloves and add mild detergent to a bucket of warm water.

    • 2

Wash the surface of the gel coat with a sponge, removing any dirt or other residues. Rinse the surface with clean water.

    • 3

Apply rubbing compound directly to the affected areas, rubbing in a circular motion until the surface is smooth and beginning to shine. Gel coat is usually relatively thick, but be careful not to rub through the gel coat down to the fiberglass that's underneath. When all oxidation or chalky areas have been removed, clean off the leftover residue using clean water and a sponge.

    • 4

Apply a heavy coat of gel coat sealer to the entire surface of gel coat using a clean rag. Let the sealer dry, and wipe the excess away with a clean rag or towel.

    • 5

Apply three heavy coats of gel coat wax using the foam applicator supplied with the wax. Let the wax dry. Thoroughly buff the entire surface until all wax is buffed in and the gel coat shines.
