Homemade Camper Accessories

Many varieties of campers are available and just as many different ideas of what should be in them. At times, camper manufacturers are unable to keep up with demands of camper owners, which results in innovators coming up with own ideas. Some of these innovations range from the simple to the complex.
  1. Pets

    • If you travel with a pet, it can be a hassle to keep him chained outside with a cork screw in the ground, especially in bad weather. An alternative is to weld an eye hook to the frame of your camper near the door. You can then attach a chain to the eye hook and the other end to your dog or cat. This way you are assured your pet will not run away and can have easy access to the door.

    Garbage

    • For those who do not have any place in the galley for a garbage can, purchase a small bathroom garbage can and mount it under the sink. Add a plastic hook on each of the narrow sides of the garbage can with adhesive. Then drill two holes about 6 to 8 inches apart on one of the wide sides of the can; make sure the holes are big enough for plastic hooks to fit through them. Fasten the plastic hooks on the back of the door under the sink 6 to 8 inches side to side. Place the garbage can over the hooks.

    Energy

    • To make your camper more energy efficient, add a solar panel to charge batteries. You can purchase a solar panel at your local camping supply store that will work to charge your battery. Drill the panel into the roof or frame of the RV. You can purchase a kit that includes all transmitters and wires necessary to connect the panel to the battery or generator. You can also change all the lights to fluorescent bulbs to reduce electricity usage. Fluorescent, energy efficient bulbs can be purchased at hardware, grocery or department stores. These light bulbs fit in the same sockets at regular light bulbs. The coil design of the bulbs helps conserve energy.
