Tachikawa Air Base: From Japanese Military to U.S. Hub to Memorial Park

History

• 1937: Established by Imperial Japanese Navy.
• WWII: Base for combat operations (China, Philippines, Pacific). Bombed by USAAF in 1944; captured 1945.
• Postwar: Used by U.S. Air Force for transport/reconnaissance; staging point for Korea and Vietnam wars.
• 1977: Returned to Japan; became Tachikawa Aircraft Memorial Park.

Facilities & Aircraft

Two runways, hangars, control tower. Hosted Japanese fighters (Zero, Hayabusa, Shiden), bombers (Betty, Kate, Ginga), U.S. transports (C-47, C-46, C-121), and helicopters (H-19, UH-1).

Today

The park preserves historic aircraft and a museum detailing the base's role in WWII and Cold War.
