What is the holterman nugget?

The Holterman Nugget is a 277-pound gold nugget discovered in 1872 by a group of miners in the Australian state of Victoria. It is one of the largest gold nuggets ever found and was named after German immigrant Bernhardt Holterman, who managed to acquire the nugget when it was put on sale in a local Melbourne hotel bar.

Holterman later sold the gold nugget to a syndicate for £9,500 (equivalent to £1,075,000 in 2023). It was subsequently smelted down and its proceeds were used to support various charitable causes such as hospitals, orphanages, and schools in the region.
