Lincoln Tunnel Manhattan Entrances: None South of 34th Street
The Lincoln Tunnel (I-495, Hudson River) has three Manhattan portals, all at or north of 34th Street. There are no entrances south of 34th Street.
Manhattan Entrance Locations (West Side)
- 34th Street & Dyer Avenue (Center Tube / South Tube entrance) — Southernmost.
- 39th Street & Dyer Avenue (North Tube entrance).
- 42nd Street & Dyer Avenue / Galvin Avenue (Center Tube exit / North Tube entrance) — Northernmost.
Tube Configuration
- North Tube (1945): 2 lanes westbound (NJ-bound). Entrance: 39th & 42nd.
- Center Tube (1937): 2 lanes reversible (AM eastbound/NY-bound, PM westbound). Entrance: 34th (AM), 42nd (PM).
- South Tube (1957): 2 lanes eastbound (NY-bound). Entrance: 34th St only.
Why No Southern Entrances?
- Geology: Tunnel depth increases southward; ventilation/approach geometry constrained.
- Urban fabric: Dense Hell's Kitchen / Chelsea street grid; Holland Tunnel (Canal St) serves downtown.
- Port Authority policy: Concentrate access at 34th–42nd corridor (near Javits, Penn Station, PABT).
Nearest Downtown Alternative
Holland Tunnel (I-78) — Entrance at Canal Street & Varick/West St (SoHo/Tribeca). 1.5 mi south of Lincoln's 34th St portal.
