How to Get to the USS Constitution

The USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned naval ship that still sails. It first launched in 1797, and it participated the First Barbary War and the War of 1812. Its iron hull gave it a longer expected life than the more common wooden ships, and earned it the nickname "Old Ironsides." The ship now spends most of its time berthed at Boston's Charlestown Navy Yard, a short walk from the city's North Station subway stop.

Instructions

    • 1

Board Boston's subway from the closest stop. An interactive subway map is on the website of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (see Resources).

    • 2

Transfer to the Green or Orange line, if you are not already on it. If you are on the red line, switch to the Green Line at Park Street. If you are on the blue line, switch to the Orange Line at State Street.

    • 3

Get off at North Station. Leave the station and walk on to Causeway Street.

    • 4

Walk east till you reach North Washington Street.

    • 5

Turn left, and walk over the Charlestown Bridge. A red stripe on the bridge marks the city's Freedom Trail, a tourist path through historic Boston sites. Follow this red path during the remainder of your walk to the ship.

    • 6

Turn right after the bridge on Chelsea Street.

    • 7

Take the next right on to Warren Street, then turn left onto Constitution Road.

    • 8

Walk to the end of the road. You will see the ship on your right.
