The easiest way to find out where a subway goes is to look at a map. Most major metropolitan areas have free subway maps, and hopstop.com will plan out your route if you enter your starting and ending destinations (see Resources). You can also usually get a map simply by asking a subway station attendant. Many guidebooks also include them. A subway map will have a map of the community and the subway imposed on top of it. You should be able to pick out your starting as well as ending destination. Most subways are organized around a series of different lines. Each subway line travels to specific stops. Most allow you to transfer from one line to another without additional cost. Subway lines are typically distinguished by number, letter and color. For example, New York City subway lines include the world-famous "A" line (outlined in blue on maps) and the 9 line.
In many cities, travel by subway is quite popular with commuters. A subway line is often a simple and relatively inexpensive way to get to work. As a result, during commuter hours from 7 to 9 a.m. and from 4 to 6 p.m., subway cars can be quite crowded and seats can be hard to find. Tourists should avoid the subways during these times, if possible, especially if they are carrying heavy luggage that may make hard to board a train.
Travel by subway is relatively quick and can be quite safe. Make it even safer with a few specific rules. Many subways operate until very late at night. Some, such as the one in New York City, operate 24 hours a day. If possible, avoid using the subway late at night. If you must use the subway at this hour, stand by the station attendant's booth for extra safety. If you can't, stand by the stairs. Do not stand near the edge of the platform. Get on the car with the conductor so you have someone to speak to in case of danger. Stay away from subway doors until you are ready to exit the train because they may open accidentally. Avoid traveling between cars while the train is in motion. Hold on to a pole to make sure you don't fall in case of sudden jerks. Keep all money in a secure place. Ignore any beggars. Make sure you know your destination quite well before you go.
