How to Open the Emergency Door on the DC Metro Train

The doors to the DC Metro trains are controlled by the operator. You may even see a Metro employee stick her head outside the train window to make sure everyone is on board. But during an evacuation or in the case of major technical problems, you might have to open the doors yourself. There are no knobs, and the doors are not designed to open on their own, even with force. But you can take control of the doors yourself and open them during an emergency.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the middle of the DC Metro train car. There are three doors on each side of the Metro, and another door on each end. Go to the middle of the rail car, where the middle doors are located.

    • 2

Determine which side of the car should be opened. Only open the side that is next to the walkway. If people try to evacuate on the wrong side, they could fall or accidentally touch the electric rail, which will cause electrocution.

    • 3

Locate the red emergency door release. It is located near the middle door of the rail car.

    • 4

Lift up the cover. You will notice a handle on the bottom of the cover to make it easy to pull up. It looks like a bulky plastic box.

    • 5

Pull the red handle inside the emergency box downward. This will release the lock on the door.

    • 6

Slide the left side of the door panel to open the door and evacuate.
