Things to Know When Riding on Amtrak

Riding on Amtrak for the first time can be pretty intimidating. Passengers often wonder how long it will take them to reach their destination and whether or not they will enjoy their trip. Amtrak offers a variety of travel options, and most passengers will enjoy the views and the relaxing experience as long as they have a good idea of what to expect. Just like any other form of long-distance transportation, Amtrak has certain policies of which travelers should be aware.
  1. Luggage Restrictions

    • Whether you are taking a long or short trip with Amtrak, you should remember to pack only what you need. Amtrak has a limit on the number of items you can take onboard and have checked. Each person can have up to two 50-pound suitcases onboard with them and three bags checked without having to pay any fees. Fortunately, you can also bring a laptop or purse onboard in addition to the two bags. Keep in mind that it may be difficult to carry heavy bags on and off the train. You may also have to wait for up to an hour when you arrive at your destination for your checked bags, so try not to pack too many extra items. To save yourself some time, put luggage tags on all of your suitcases before going to the station.

    Food Service Policies

    • There are several dining options available for Amtrak passengers depending on the type of seating they reserve and the type of train on which they travel. Travelers who purchase coach tickets can either eat in the lounge or dining car, whichever is available, or they can bring their own snacks for the trip. If you decide to take your own food, avoid taking anything that needs to be refrigerated or reheated, as you will not be able to do this onboard. According to Amtrak, the cost of meals is included in the ticket for individuals staying in a bedroom, suite or roomette. You will also be given first priority in making reservations for your meal times if you have that type of accommodation. Keep in mind that dining car seating is limited and by reservation only. It is a good idea to bring a few snacks with you in case you get hungry while waiting.

    Safety Precautions

    • Your safety is the most important thing to consider while planning your trip, boarding the train and riding onboard. Keep in mind that not all stations and trains employ the same security measures and that Amtrak police officers are mainly located at the largest train stations. Before you leave for your trip, pack your money and valuable belongings in a small bag that you can carry with you at all times. Wear comfortable, slip-resistant shoes. Be aware of your departure and arrival times and try to arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before your train is scheduled to leave.
