Things to Know When Getting a Permit in NYC

Regulations are set forth by numerous governmental offices and entities in the form of permits. Each state has its own requirements for obtaining a permit for a wide array of activities. For instance, if you are fishing in Wisconsin, a license or permit is needed before your fishing trip. Both the city and state of New York has its own requirements for obtaining permits for different activities.

  1. Building Permit

    • The process of obtaining a building permit in New York requires the applicant to complete four or five steps, before being eligible to apply for the actual permit. You must first pre-file the application, which is followed by paying a fee, professionally certifying the plans, making an appointment if disapproved, and then filing for the permit. The pre-filing consists of submitting three copies of the drawings with energy calculations. Several forms are also required, such as the asbestos form and the PW1 form, which is the work plan.

    Driver Permit

    • Referred to as a learner’s permit, a driving permit in New York carries its own set of requirements. You must be at least 16 years old, have proof of identity with your date of birth and be able to show a social security card when applying for a learner’s permit. It is also recommended that you study the New York State Driver's Manual, since the written test must be passed in order to receive a permit. On the day of your permit test, you must complete a driver license application, take an eye test and pay the application and driver license fee.

    Special Events Permit

    • If you are planning to host a special event in New York City then a special permit is required. Permits take from 21 to 30 days to process and an administrative processing fee must be paid before the processing begins. If you are planning to have revenue-rendering activities, such as the services offered by vendors, a Temporary Use Authorization (TUA) is also required. The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation also provides you with steps for making your event green with a list of green event options that can be downloaded prior to applying for the special events permit.
