Discount Train Travel in California

Train travel has always been romantic, but it can also be a relaxing and affordable way to see California's natural wonders and dynamic cities.
  1. Amtrak Discounts

    • Whether you are traveling with children ages 2 to 15, are an active-duty serviceman or servicewoman, or have an AAA, Veterans Advantage or Student Advantage card, Amtrak offers regular discounts ranging from 10 percent to 50 percent off your fare or your children's fares.

    California Rail Pass

    • For travelers with multiple destinations, the Amtrak California Rail Pass can be used on any seven days within a 21-day span. As of November 2010, the pass costs $159 for those 16 and older and $80 for children ages 2 to 15 who are accompanying an adult. The pass may be used on the San Joaquin, Pacific Surfliner and Capitol Corridor trains and the Coast Starlight between Los Angeles and Dunsmuir. It is also eligible on most connecting Amtrak Thruway motorcoaches.

    When To Buy Tickets

    • During peak travel times, including major holidays and summer months, routes book up quickly. The National Association of Railroad Passengers advise that as Amtrak's computers clear expired reservations overnight; if you contact Amtrak just as the vacancies appear, usually between 5 and 8 a.m. Eastern time, you might grab a last-minute discounted seat.
