When were the railways built in England and Wales?
The construction of railways in England and Wales began in the early 19th century. The Stockton and Darlington Railway, which was the first public railway in the world to use steam locomotives, was opened in 1825. This was followed by the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830, which was the first inter-city railway in the world. The railway network in England and Wales expanded rapidly in the following decades, with the construction of many new lines and stations. By 1850, there were over 6,000 miles of railway track in England and Wales.
