Be aware that trains leave Vancouver for Saskatoon three times a week, on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Get ready for a 30-hour journey. You may not think it's quite long enough to justify paying for a bed, but get some sleep: you'll detrain at about 1:45 a.m. after 2 days in transit.
Review the options before you book train travel. Comfort Class, the economical choice, is less than half the price of Silver & Blue Class, which has five levels and entitles the traveler to a bed and shower. Also remember when you book your tickets that the higher class entitles you to access certain areas of the train.
Be advised that alcohol consumption is governed by the laws of the province that the train is traveling through. For the most part, if you want to drink on the train, you need to buy drinks on the train.
Book your travel online, over the telephone or through a travel agent. Or buy your tickets in person at the train station. Either way, make sure to verify all the information on the ticket, since it can't be changed at the last minute.
Remember that Saskatoon has hot summers (up to 100 degrees F) and cold winters (as low as -40 degrees F), so take those extreme temperatures into consideration when booking your travel.
Get ready to hit traffic. Saskatoon's rapidly growing population has caused major traffic congestion, so add extra time into your calculations, if you plan to drive from the station.
