How to Calculate Taxi Fare in Chicago

It's easy to get around Chicago by public buses and subways. But cabs are more convenient. You'll pay more than you would on public transportation, but you'll also be dropped off at your exact destination. There is a flat rate of $2.25, a charge of $1.80 for each additional mile and a $2 charge for ever six minutes of waiting time. You'll be charged an extra $1 for the first additional passenger over the age of 12 and under the age of 65, and 50 cents for each additional passenger after that.

Instructions

    • 1

Estimate the miles between your starting point and your destination. Consult an online directions tools such as Google Maps. Multiply by $1.80. Record this number.

    • 2

Count the number of passengers other than yourself who are over the age of 12 and under the age of 65. You will be charged $1 for one of them and $.50 for the rest. For example, if you have four additional passengers, you will be charged $2.50. Calculate what your passenger fare will be and record this number.

    • 3

Estimate how many minutes of waiting time there will be during your cab ride. For every six minutes of waiting time, multiply by two. Record this number. This is a difficult number to estimate, but assume that you'll have about six minutes of waiting time for every six miles you travel.

    • 4

Add up the numbers you recorded in steps 1, 2 and 3. This will be your taxi fare.
