How to Soak Wooden Wheels

Wooden wheels are found on carriages, wagons, older cars, and a variety of other equipment. As time goes on the wood begins to shrink. Even though it doesn't shrink enough for you to notice with your naked eye, it is plenty enough to cause the wheel to fall off the vehicle it is on. Soaking the wheel in water will cause the wood to "drink" the water forcing the wood to expand. This process needs to be completed every two years.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wooden wheel from the carriage. Place the carriage on a jack until the wheel is replaced.

    • 2

Tie a rope around the wooden wheel.

    • 3

Place the wooden wheel in a pond, creek or lake. Submerge the wheel in the water. Ensure that the entire wheel is covered by the water. Place smaller wheels in a tote full of water, or a large bucket. Check the water level daily to ensure that the wheel is covered by water.

    • 4

Tie the other end of the rope to a large rock or tree. The rope will keep the wheel from moving down stream as the water moves. Allow the wheel to soak in the water for two weeks. This will cause the wood to expand and prevent it from falling off the hub.
