Study Questions for a Permit Test

Learning to drive is a milestone for most teenagers, and earning a driver's permit requires study in order to become familiar with road signs, rules and regulations, and safe driving habits. If your teen will be taking the driver's permit test soon, you can help him study by going over a few questions.
  1. Signs

    • It's important for your teen to know what the signs on the road mean, so they can drive accordingly. Several questions featuring street signs will be on the permit test. For instance, an orange diamond-shaped sign with a figure that has a flag should be a signal to your teen to slow down, since a construction worker or police officer likely will be just ahead on the road to direct traffic at a construction site. A sign that shows a picture of a car on a winding road means that the road is slippery, so drivers should proceed with caution. And of course, your teen should be aware of all signs that tell the speed limit or give indications for drivers to adjust to their speed when entering a school or residential zone.

    Colors

    • There will be several questions pertaining to color on the driver's permit test. More than likely, your teen knows what the traffic light colors mean (red-stop, yellow-caution, green-go), but it's essential to point out that questions on the driver's permit test will feature signs in these colors as well. For instance, even if a red octagon sign does not have the word "Stop" on it, drivers should still come to a halt when they see the sign. Yellow signs usually mean the driver should slow down or drive with care, such as when entering a hospital zone or coming up on road construction.

    Intersections and Passing

    • There will be several written questions on the driver's permit test that cover rules of courtesy while on the road. For instance, your teen should know that when entering an intersection it is proper to take turns driving through -- the car that arrived the earliest should go first, and so on. When the road has double yellow lines, drivers cannot pass into the adjacent lane; drivers can switch lanes on a road with a single white broken line.

    Parking

    • Parking questions on the permit test will include where it is OK to park. Go over questions with your teen that address the fact that it is illegal to park in front of a fire hydrant or on a bridge. It is also unsafe to park within 10 feet of an intersection. There will be questions about parallel parking as well, so be sure to go over this with your child on paper and in the car.
