Traveling can be a rewarding experience. Seeing another culture and experiencing life in another country can change you. Because it is generally expensive to travel, getting funding from some reliable sources is beneficial no matter what your reason for traveling.
Grants may be obtained through national nonprofit organizations, schools or research institutions. Because it is a grant, it does not have to be paid back, as in the case of a loan.
Many organizations provide funding for research and study by female scientists, such as travel grants supported in part by the National Science Foundation (see Resources). Female activists also can get support from groups such as the Global Fund for Women (see Resources).
Grants for study can often be obtained through your school. Check with the study-abroad office to get more information on grant qualifications.
If you are a student and would like some personal enrichment, there are some grants of interest. These monetary awards can be given to male or female candidates and may be found at the Study Abroad Funding website (see Resources).
Before leaving, make certain you are aware of all requirements of travel to your destination country. Make sure your passport is valid, you have gotten all necessary shots, and have enough currency on you for transportation and a meal once you arrive.
