The ACLS provides funding for experts wishing to present papers at academic or scholarly conferences. The papers being presented must focus on Eastern Europe. The conferences must be located in Eastern European. Scholars from Eastern Europe may apply for conferences in the U.S. Grants range from $1,000 to $2,500.
Amy Lowell was a poet and literary patroness who lived in the late 19th and early 20th century. In her will she added a clause that a trustee will appoint a committee that includes one English professor from Harvard University which will choose one poet to award a traveling grant. The grant requires the poet to travel for one year. The grant amount is about $50,000 for the year.
The Fogarty International Center funds researchers traveling to Japan with the intention to work with host Japanese researchers. The intent of the funding is to promote mutual understanding within science. Short-term grants cover about two months while longer-term grants are for about ten to twenty four months. Grants vary per project depending on the needs of the scienctists involved. The funding is meant to support the research as well as the living costs of the researchers.
The Fulbright Scholarship is open to U.S. citizens with a Ph.D. or other terminal degree in field who have experience teaching at the university level. These persons must exhibit a knowledge of the language for the country in which they are traveling, unless lecturing in English is the standard for the destination country. Fulbright Scholarships are given in a number of disciplines: the arts, literature, science, humanities, mathematics among others. Amounts vary depending on the needs of the proposed projects. In 2008 U.S. Congress approved $215.4 million for the Fulbright program.
