As of 2010, the NEA Foundation Learning & Leadership Grant financially benefits public school teachers, public education support professionals, and faculty and staff in public institutions of higher education traveling to an educational event. The grant covers an individual's participation in a high-quality professional development course, conference or institute local or abroad. The grant amount for individuals, as of 2010, is $2,000 per grantee. Note that NEA grants may only support travel costs for one person.
As of 2010, the Fulbright program--sponsored by the United States Department of State--offers over 1200 long and short-term grants for U.S. scholars, students, faculty, administrators and professionals to represent America abroad. Aspiring world-scholars and educators can apply for a Fulbright grant to perform research in another country, teach English, take graduate or intensive language courses.
Also sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, grantees act as ambassadors for American scholarship abroad while completing, or just beginning, their life's-passion overseas. Individual travel grants cover all travel costs, accommodation and other daily living costs. Any extraneous travel, to tour the countryside for example, is not covered by the Fulbright program.
The National Science foundation supports budding scientists, researchers and engineers through its Developing Global Scientists and Engineers program. The grant provides high-quality international research experiences for individual U.S. students seeking to travel and research abroad. Whereas the International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) component of the program supports groups of U.S. undergraduate or graduate students conducting research abroad in collaboration with foreign investigators, the Doctoral Dissertation Enhancement Projects (DDEP) component supports the dissertation research abroad of one doctoral student in collaboration with a foreign investigator.
