Travel Grants for Youth

The United Kingdom has a history of sending young people out into the world for education, cultural and work experience. Travel grants for youth--for volunteering breaks and gap years--are available from several governmental and philanthropic groups. According to World Wide Volunteering, there are at least 1,000 educational trusts in the UK, giving out about £300 million a year. You might qualify for a youth travel grant through one of these organizations.
  1. Raleigh Graduate Bursary Awards

    • Youth travel grants fund Costa Rican expeditions.

Raleigh International organizes volunteering and youth travel expeditions for young people between the ages of 17 and 24. Their graduate bursaries program is co-funded by the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. It provides youth travel grants worth two-thirds of the cost of one of Raleigh's 10-week expeditions to places like Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Applicants for the bursaries can be recent graduates or about to graduate, and must be residents in England.

    Youth in Action

    • Promoting cross border understanding through travel grants

The Youth in Action (YiA) program is an EU initiative that provides youth travel grants for 15- to 18-year olds. The program, which is funded through 2013, supports crossborder European volunteering and exchanges. Another part of the YiA scheme, Youth in the World, sponsors exchanges with Europe's near, non-EU neighbors. In the UK, YiA is administered by The British Council.
