Check that you meet the state's age requirement for the state that you live in. This can be done at your state Department of Motor Vehicle website or on the phone with the state DMV. The age that a person can get a learner's permit varies from state to state. For example, the minimum learner's permit age in Florida is 15, while New York's is 16.
Locate your proof of identity before you make the appointment. The Department of Motor Vehicles in your state will require proof that you are who you say you are. Examples of proof of identity that will get approved by your state's DMV include a birth certificate, a military dependent identification picture and a non-driver identification card.
Take any required driver education courses before you request a permit. State requirements regarding driver education courses vary and you should check your state's Department of Motor Vehicle website for the requirement (See Resources).
