How to Make a Cargo Rack for a Bike

Bicycles are an efficient means of transportation for people of all ages. They serve as a means for commuting, have recreation value and can haul cargo. Bicycle cargo racks can carry groceries, packages and small animal carriers. Not all cargo carriers need to have sides. Some of the most useful bicycle cargo carriers lay flat allowing items to be stacked and then held in place with bungee cords. Cargo carriers attach to the front or back wheel axle becoming a part of the frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Brace the bicycle in a vertical standing position. The kick stand is not sufficient for vertical standing. Use padded vise grips on a workbench to stabilize the bicycle. Set the bicycle upside down in the vise grips so the cross bar is squeezed creating a stable vertical position for work on the bike.

    • 2

Twist the nuts holding the back tire off the wheel axle with an open-end wrench. You do not need to remove the wheel axle.

    • 3

Take the support braces and align the holes to the wheel axle. Decide how high you want the cargo rack. There are holes on the braces that determine the height of the cargo rack. Make sure the holes align on both sides of the wheel axle. Put the nut back on the axle bolt and tighten with the open-end wrench. Align the braces as you tighten the nut so they are vertical.

    • 4

Set the woven basket on top of the braces (they stick up vertically from the wheel axle). Align the weave of the basket to the braces. Push down on the basket so the braces break through the bottom of the basket and stick out 4 inches.

    • 5

Screw a 4 inch wide metal bracket into the braces coming from the wheel axle. The length of the metal bracket needs to equal the width of the basket. Align the holes and the bracket and attach them with a bolt, washer and nut. Tighten by hand and then secure as tightly as possible with an open-end wrench.

Exert pressure on the braces inside the basket so they bend toward each other. Bend the braces at the bottom of the basket inward. Align the last hole of the braces and connect them with a bolt, washer and nut. This cargo rack can hold grocery bags, books and other loose items that need to be contained while biking.
