There may be times when you are traveling or moving to another part of the country or world and you need to take your dog on the airline flight with you. Flying with a pet can be stressful, especially if you have to reserve a spot for your dog in the cargo hold where you cannot see her until the flight has ended and the baggage is unloaded. With a few tips, you will be able to reserve a spot for your dog on most airlines without any glitches or stress.
Call the airline you wish to travel on ahead of your scheduled travel date to see if your pet can travel in the cabin or below in the cargo hold. The earlier you call, the better. Some airlines will only allow up to seven animals to be booked on one flight, so call early.
Purchase a pet carrier that fits your dog and fits the standards allowed by the airline. Most airlines only allow very small dogs to travel in the cabin in a small carrier if they are accompanying you and you can fit that carrier under a seat in front of you. Give the measurements of the carrier to the airline representative to make sure the airline will allow that carrier on that particular airline.
Ask the representative how much the airline will charge for the dog to travel on the airline. Fees greatly vary from each airline. Inquire about cancellation charges.
Inquire with the airline representative about temperature restrictions for your dog's flight. Some airlines will not allow dogs to travel when the air temperature is below 45 degrees F or above 75 degrees F.
Ensure that your dog has had all his vaccine shots and you have the appropriate paperwork, as the airline may ask to see before your dog flies. Your vet should be able to give you copies.
Ask the airline representative if the cargo hold the pet is being shipped in is temperature-controlled for your dog's safety.
Book the flight for your dog and make sure you confirm with the airline representative where you will be picking up your dog after the flight lands if you are not traveling with your dog in the cabin.
