One of the most successful low-cost American airlines, Jet Blue is headquartered in Queens, New York and operates from its main hub, John F. Kennedy International Airport. Beginning in 2001, Jet Blue started its first operations at the Long Beach Airport and Boston's Logan International Airport. Growing into a profitable enterprise, it began to operate throughout the country, the Caribbean and Mexico.
The company was founded by David Neeleman and a number of Southwest Airlines employees in February 1999. Jet Blue was formally authorized to operate in February of 2000. One year later, the first flights began.
Jet Blue's core principles feature low-cost travel matched with a number of amenities including in-flight entertainment, satellite radio and a TV on every seat.
Jet Blue has won a number of awards for its service over the years. In 2007, it was awarded the Conde Nast Traveler "Readers' Choice Award" for best domestic airline. In 2008, it won J.D. Power and Associates' "Highest Customer Satisfaction Among Low Cost Carriers in North America" award.
One of the successes of Jet Blue that makes it more profitable than most airlines is the fact that it has remained non-union. Despite this fact, the employees of the company retain a number of competitive benefits and industry-standard compensation.
Most planes in the fleet of Jet Blue are named after something to do with the word "blue." Examples of this include "Big Blue Bus," "Blue Suede Shoes," "Sacre Bleu!," "Whole Lotta Blue" and "Rhapsody in Blue."
