As its name implies, a permanent marker is designed to be permanent. It stains everything, including plastic, walls, and wood. Fabric is one of the most porous materials and one of the most difficult from which to remove ink stains.
Sharpie, a leading manufacturer of pens, recommends the following. Treat the stain immediately for best results. Consider the washing instructions on the fabric label. Test stain removers on an inconspicuous area first. Put the stain face down on towels and apply stain remover to the back to pull out the stain. Heat from an iron or washing can further set the stain. Sharpie recommends Amodex Stain Remover.
Don't rub the stain, only dab at it if it is still damp. Try alternate stain removers. Rubbing alcohol is another option. Sponge it onto the back of the stain and surrounding area. Avoid letting the stain dry out before you are finished working on it.
An ink stripper can be used on marker that is on white fabrics. The manufacturer's directions should be followed.
Marker stains are much easier to prevent than to remove. There are many kinds of washable markers available in a variety of colors. They wash off surfaces, fabrics, and skin, but remain on paper. If washable markers aren't an option, stains can be prevented (or controlled) by wearing clothing that is protected by a stain guard or that is already old or stained.
Many cleaners can be quite toxic. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and use in well ventilated areas. Keep all cleaners out of reach of children.
