How to Spray Paint a BMX Frame

Bike enthusiasts enjoy customizing their bikes with accessories and unique color choices. In fact, painting a bike frame allows a bike owner to show his personality through color and design choices. However, painting a BMX frame requires some preparation. A professional-looking paint job cannot be accomplished unless the frame is stripped completely of stickers, seat clamp bolts and cable guides. Careful preparation of the bike frame's surface will result in a quality color finish and last for many years.

Instructions

  1. Preparing The Surface

    • 1

Remove all accessories, such as gyro tabs, from the BMX frame. Pull off any stickers or decals from the frame's surface. The sticky adhesive residue must be removed, as well. Apply a solvent to the adhesive and rub away the residue away with a paper towel.

    • 2

Apply paint remover to the entire frame. The remover will strip the original paint and overcoats from the frame's surface. Sand the frame afterward to remove any leftover paint residue. Wipe the frame with a paper towel to remove remaining sandpaper grit or paint chips.

    • 3

Paint two coats of primer on the entire bike frame. Make sure to cover every crevice of the frame with the primer for a quality base coat. Allow to the primer dry.

    • 4

Sand the primer surface with sandpaper until the surface is covered with scratches. The surface must be scraped to allow good adhesion for the final coating of paint.

    • 5

Wipe the frame completely with a damp paper towel to remove any debris from the final sanding procedure. Allow the frame to dry.

    Painting

    • 6

Hang the frame in a position allowing 360-degree access to all areas.

    • 7

Apply the colored paint in short bursts from the spray can. Cover the entire frame with a thin coat of paint. Apply several more layers of paint, as desired.

    • 8

Apply a clear coat sealant at least 24 hours after coating the frame with color. The finish protects against rust and other damage.
