The oldest continuously run summer camp in Maine is Camp Cobbossee, founded in 1903 on Cobbossee Lake in Winthrop, Maine. Previously named Cobbossee Academy, it was founded as a boys’ summer school and military training camp. Camp Cobbossee evolved into a summer camp when other schools offered students military programs.
