Women Land Grant Recipients in Spanish/Mexican California
During Spanish and Mexican rule, land grants (ranchos) overwhelmingly went to men. Historian Lisbeth Haas estimates only ~2% of grantees were women. Notable exceptions:
- María Ignacia Pico – Rancho Los Alamitos (1784)
- María Josefa Carrillo de Castro – Rancho San Miguel (1834)
- María Isabel Yorba – inherited Rancho La Bolsa Chica (1839)
- Josefa Ramona Pico – Rancho El Piojo (1841)
- Juana Briones de Miranda – Rancho Las Pulgas (1842)
These women demonstrated remarkable resilience in a male-dominated society.
