A gazebo is a type of outdoor structure that comes in a few diverse varieties. There is a basic wooden or vinyl gazebo that is built as an octagon or hexagon-shaped structure. The roof is made into a cone shape, while the base is typically surrounded by railings with one main entrance. One variety on the basic design is to have a screen assembled around the perimeter of the gazebo rails for protection against bugs and some high winds. An octagonal gazebo (which has eight sides) would easily fit a picnic table inside, while a hexagon (with six sides) might hold a small table.
A canopy is the most basic style of picnic table shelters. The canopy is often a square-shaped shelter that stands anywhere from 8 to 12 feet tall. The canopy might be a fixed wooden structure, like ones seen at lakes and public parks, or it may be temporary. Home improvement stores sell seasonal canopies that unfold into a sturdy shelter, but may not withstand heavy winds and rain. Some canopies come with a screen that is latched for protection, then opened when desired.
A pergola is a picnic shelter in the essence of great craftsmanship. The design is meant to enhance an outdoor decor, while providing protection from the sun. A pergola is built with wood, though a few are made with vinyl product by some manufacturers. Built as a square or rectangular structure, the pergola enlists slats overhead, for which a thick fabric is weaved through for shade. Some pergolas even have vine plants growing through the slats for a more natural look. Pergolas are popular at residences, since they offer more advantages for appearance then they do for actual use.
