Fish Lake is a favored destination that is close to Humboldt County. Elevation for this natural .6-mile long lake is 1,712 feet. Large campgrounds are available that accommodate RVs and large vehicles. Go hiking through the Horse Ridge National Scenic Trail just outside of Fish Lake or simply go fishing on the lake. You can catch rainbow trout and other types of fish in this area as long as you have a fishing license. Although adjacent to many redwood trees, you will find more open areas and plains near Fish Lake. Fish Lake is also tied to a trail system that joins with other lakes such as Blue Lake and Red Mountain Lake.
Hidden Springs Campgrounds is a large camping area that has 154 camp sites. All sites are equipped with outdoor barbecues and picnic tables and some sites also have food lockers. These sites also accommodate RVs and trailers but there are not hookups for electricity. The Hidden Springs Campground is located within the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The area features plenty of hiking and biking trails such as the Grasshopper Peak Trail and Founder's Grove Nature Loop Trail. The Grasshopper Peak Trail is a tough 13.4-mile steep hike that features plenty of big trees and the Eel River. The Founders Grove Nature Loop Trail features one of the tallest redwood trees right at the entrance. This is a short easy .6-mile trail which is ideal for families with small children.
The Jedediah Smith Campground is also found within Humboldt County. This campground is similar to other campgrounds because it offers basic amenities, but you may notice some differences here such as older growth redwood trees. This area also features guided walks. The campground is also located within the Redwoods State Park. This particular campground is close to the Smith River; the 20-mile long river is surrounded by forest and open plains. The slow currents make the river safe for swimming in certain areas; however, weather patterns change so don't go swimming if the current changes. This campground also features several hikes for the beginner and seasoned hiker. The Stout Grove trail is a short .6-mile hike that borders the Smith River. The Mill Creek Trail is a 7.4-mile hike that follows Mill Creek upstream, and is very thick with dense redwoods.
The Grizzly Creek Redwoods Campground is located in the heart of the Grizzly Creek State Park. This park has 30 campsites that offer plenty of amenities such as large camping spots and picnic areas. The visitors center has a bookstore and plenty of wildlife exhibits. You can also go on a hike or bike ride along the many small trails within this area. The Bull Creek Flats trail is a 9.4-mile hike that takes about five hours to complete. The Drury Chaney Loop is a 2.5-mile hike that is best suited for people who prefer a shorter, easier trail. This is a small secluded state park compared to other areas within Humboldt county.
