Camping at Granite Flat

The western U.S. is home to an abundance of national forests that protect vast swaths of scenic woodlands, mountains, lakes and rivers, providing a haven for outdoor activities such as camping, fishing and hiking. California and Utah alone have 22 national forests between them, including Tahoe National Forest set amid northern California's Sierra Nevada and Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest along northern Utah's Wasatch Range. Among their dozens of camping areas, both forests have campgrounds called Granite Flat.
  1. California: Location and Setting

    • Tahoe National Forest's Granite Flat Campground lies just off Highway 89 South, less than 3 miles south of historic downtown Truckee and 35 miles southwest of Reno, Nevada. Set in a grove of pine trees along the banks of the Truckee River, the campground provides easy access to trout fishing, swimming and tubing in the river, as well as several hiking trails within a short drive. Also nearby is Donner Memorial State Park, 3.5 miles northwest of the campground, where you can fish or boat in Donner Lake, hike trails and visit the Emigrant Trail Museum and Pioneer Monument. The museum and monument commemorate those who emigrated to California in the mid-1800s, including the infamous Donner Party.

    California: Campground Amenities

    • Tahoe's Granite Flat Campground has 65 non-electric sites, most of which accommodate tents, trailers and RVs up to 60 feet in length. Seven walk-in sites are for tents only. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring and grill. Campground amenities include vault toilets, drinking water and firewood available for purchase. The campground is open seasonally, typically from mid-May to mid-October, and reservations can be made up to six months in advance.

    Utah: Location and Setting

    • Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest's Granite Flat Campground lies amid a grove of aspen, fir, spruce and pine trees along American Fork Canyon, about 25 miles north of Provo and 40 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. The nearby Tibble Fork and Silver Flat reservoirs provide trout fishing, canoeing, kayaking and scuba diving opportunities, and the American Fork Creek is a popular fly-fishing spot for those seeking rainbow trout. Several hiking trails are in the vicinity, including some that lead into the forest's Lone Peak and Mount Timpanogos wilderness areas. Another nearby attraction is Timpanogos Cave National Monument, 6 miles southwest of the campground. After a steep 1.5-mile hike, tour a three-room cave system filled with colorful helictite formations and soak in magnificent vistas of American Fork Canyon. The caves are open from May to September.
