Primitive Camping Areas in Southern Missouri With Places to Swim

While some outdoor adventurers do all of their traveling and sleeping in a large RV, there are still many people who prefer a more primitive style of camping. Finding the perfect location, setting up your tent and sleeping in the great outdoors has a feeling unto itself, and one that can truly only be felt when camping primitively. Missouri offers an abundance of campgrounds where you can do just that; many of the camps are combined with RV or cabin sites to cater to all types campers.
  1. Council Bluff Recreation Area

    • The Council Bluff Recreation Area is a recreational park that includes the Wild Boar Campground. This campground provides wooded, primitive camping that is within hiking or driving distance of Council Bluff Lake. There is a 12-mile trail around Council Bluff Lake this is available to both hikers and bike-riders. The swimming area is typically open from mid-May until mid-September, while the campground and recreation area is open from April until October. Reservations are required four days in advance and must include a three-day minimum stay during holidays. The Council Bluff Recreation Area is located in the Mark Twain National Forest.

    Alley Spring

    • Alley Spring is a campground that is located near the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The campground itself is open year-round, with restrooms and running water available from mid-April until October. Swimming attractions at Alley Spring include Jacks Fork River, Current River and Rocky Falls on Rocky Creek. The campground is located five miles from the town of Eminence, where campers can go for food and supplies. Reservations at Alley Spring are required seven days in advance of your stay.

    Arrowhead Cabins and Campground

    • Arrowhead Cabins and Campground provides cabins and primitive campsites for travelers to enjoy. Owned and operated by Tina and Robert McQuerry, the campground itself is situated directly on the Jacks Fork River and within the town limits of Eminence, Missouri. Nearby water attractions include Alley Spring, Round Spring and Blue Spring. Hot showers and restrooms are provided at Arrowhead Cabins and Campground. RV sites are also available.

    Van Buren Campground

    • Offering nearly nine acres of property on the Jacks Fork River, the Van Buren Campground is a recreational area that offers primitive and RV camping directly on the riverfront. Amenities offered by the Van Buren Campground include picnic tables, fire rings, horseshoe pits and hot water in the campground's bath house. The Van Buren Campground is family-owned and operated and located within walking distance of the town of Van Buren for maximum convenience.
