Three Ways to Light a Fire Without Matches

Lighting a fire without matches is sometimes necessary in survival situations and can be a life saver, or is just a cool trick to show off to friends. There are a number of different ways to start a fire with out matches, assuming you have other basic materials at your disposal. However, the more ways you know to start a fire, the better chance you have at surviving in the wilderness.
  1. Fire Plough

    • Cut a groove in wood fire board that is at least six inches long; the groove should run the length of the fire board. At the end of the fire board, dry twigs, leaves and other small pieces of kindling should be piled so that when a spark is created these things will ignite. Then with a slightly stronger piece of wood, like a small branch from a tree, rubbing should begin in the groove. This rubbing should go back and forth in the groove and heighten in intensity, gathering heat and creating sawdust in the groove itself. As the groove becomes hotter and hotter the sawdust will catch sparks from the friction and then the kindling you piled up will also ignite.

    Lenses or Magnifying Glass

    • With the lens of a magnifying glass or the lens of eye glasses, you can start a fire relatively easily on a dry patch of kindling you have gathered for a fire. This can be done if the sun is out and shining brightly. Hold up the lens and direct sunlight through it; direct the beam onto the kindling to start a fire. You will see the sunlight beam coming through it, growing larger and smaller in focus on the brush itself. The smaller the concentration of the beam, the hotter it will get. Hold the lens on the dry kindling until it begins to smoke and then use your breath to help fuel the fire with oxygen so that it gets going. Filling balloons or condoms with water can also create a lens which can direct sunlight through it and start a fire if an actual lens is not available.

    Can and Chocolate

    • You can also make fire with the bottom of soft drink can and a small piece of chocolate. It's surprisingly simple. Rub the bottom of the soft drink can, the shiny aluminum surface, with a piece of chocolate you have with you. Then wipe off the chocolate with a rag. You will notice the bottom of the can is incredibly shiny now, as the chocolate has acted as a polishing agent. With this shiny bottom of the can, you now have a mirror. Aim this aluminum mirror at the sun and then hold a piece of kindling against it. It will take some time, but the sun's rays will ultimately heat up intensely against this piece of dry kindling and catch it on fire.
