McLain, Mississippi, is a remote town of just over 600 people and sits on the northeastern border of Desoto National Forest, about a 1.5-hour drive from the Gulf. Visitors who stop in McLain on their way to the park won't find a hotel there, but accommodations are nearby in Leaksville, Lucedale and Richton, all about a half hour drive away.
