Considered the halfway point between South Florida and Puerto Rico, Mayaguana is an island in the Bahamas. Populated by 400 inhabitants, it offers a peaceful and relaxing getaway as it is one of the least visited islands by tourists. However, because it is so isolated, the Baycaner Beach Resort is the only hotel on the island of Mayaguana. Another option is staying with one of the local families.
Mayaguana has a private airport; however, flights are only available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, arriving at 9 a.m. and departing at noon, but expect delays. Direct flights from the United States to Mayaguana are not an option. You first have to fly to Nassau, another island in the Bahamas. Due to the airport hours at Mayaguana, you may have to stay overnight in Nassau. If convenience is a concern, you can arrange a private plane through LeAir Charter, which also flies out of Nassau. Other options to get to the island include boats; however, travel usually takes two days.
Sitting directly on the beach, Baycaner Beach Resort hotel is located in the settlement of Pirate's Well in Mayaguana. The resort has 16 rooms, each equipped with air-conditioning, satellite television and a private bath. Enjoy Bahamian cuisine in the water-front dining room. Play pool in the saloon or make use of the wireless Internet. Although there is not a pool, you will have no trouble occupying yourself with beach activities such as playing volleyball or snorkeling. You can also take a tour from a local guide.
Mayaguana is composed of three settlements, each of which has a homecoming festival during the year. This is when former residents come back to the island for a reunion. Festival activities include a beach picnic, sporting events and a talent show. Most vacationers visit the island for scuba diving, snorkeling and bonefishing. There are also canoeing and boat tours. Activities on land include duck hunting and off-trail bike riding. Locals often participate in sports such as basketball and always welcome competition.
Because of the isolation, much of Mayaguana is undeveloped and lacks road. Instead of car rentals, locals will rent out their private vehicles. Expect elevated gas prices and low miles per gallon. However, for considerably less money, you can arrange rides from the locals. Mayaguane also does not have many shopping attractions. There is a bar in Pirate's Well called Velva and Alvin's Place. You will find an occasional small cottage that runs as a "petty shop" (small convenience store). The Baycaner Beach Resort hotel is the only establishment which accepts credit cards. Be sure to bring cash and lots of sunscreen.
