The small town of Rio Nido, California, sits along the banks of the Russian River not far from the Pacific Ocean. This area north of San Francisco is famous for its vineyards and wineries, as well as the ancient redwood trees at Armstrong Woods State Park. The town does not offer accommodations, but lodging may be found in the neighboring towns of Guerneville and Monte Rio, which are within six miles of Rio Nido.

The Russian River Village Inn in the neighboring town of Monte Rio has 10 guest rooms. It is known for being highlighted in the 1942 Bing Crosby film, Holiday Inn. Tennis courts within walking distance of the inn are available for guest use. Rooms either overlook the Russian River or offer a garden view. The on-site Russian River Village Inn Restaurant serves American cuisine with an emphasis on locally grown produce. It is open only for dinner service and includes a full bar. Applewood Inn offers fine dining approximately 2.5 miles from the inn.
Monte Rio's Highland Dell Lodge has been in operation since 1906 and was renovated in 2006. Every suite includes down bedding and a private bath; riverside suites have private balconies. Guests enjoy complimentary continental breakfasts, and the on-site Riverview Restaurant features California and German cuisine. The lodge is the setting for the annual Russian River Oktoberfest and is closed to guests from January to March.
