Arapahoe was first established in 1859 in present-day Jefferson County, Colorado. That original site is now a ghost town. The second Arapahoe town site is located along Highway 40 in Cheyenne County, Colorado, just west of the Colorado state line. Though there are no hotels in Arapahoe itself, there are several hotels and motels within a short drive.
The Plains Hotel is located 12 miles west of Arapahoe in the town of Cheyenne Wells. This small hotel has a history dating back to 1919. As of early 2011, it is owned and operated by Jerry and Deniele Mordini. The Plains Hotel features seven themed guest rooms. Amenities include free breakfast, private baths, a tea and sitting room, cable television, fax machine, central heating and air conditioning, wireless Internet, and a parlor featuring a dessert bar and big screen TV.
Twenty miles northeast of Arapahoe is Sharon Springs, Kansas, where there is an Oak Tree Inn. The hotel is located on Highway 27. The Oak Tree Inn in Sharon Springs features a conference room and fitness center. Free breakfast is provided for guests at Penny's Diner, which is open 24 hours a day. Guests receive free wireless Internet access, free local calling and free parking. The hotel is a nonsmoking establishment. Children under 12 stay free. Pets are accepted and there are handicap-accessible rooms.
The Heyl Traveler Motel is also located 20 minutes east of Arapahoe in Sharon Springs, Kansas. The Heyl Traveler Motel features 12 guest rooms, wireless Internet, as well as a microwave, coffeemaker and refrigerator in all rooms. Both smoking and nonsmoking rooms are available. Rates are $39 per night for a single queen-size bed and $48 per night for two double-size beds, as of January 2011. Extended and weekly rates are available, as are showers for truckers.
There are a number of larger hotels a little further away, if nothing in Cheyenne Wells or Sharon Springs suits your needs. Less than an hour north of Arapahoe along Interstate 70 you'll find a Holiday Inn Express, a Comfort Inn, a Super 8, a Motel 6, a Howard Johnson, a Days Inn and a Super 8 motel. Amenities at each of these hotels are similar to those offered at their standard locations across America.
