  1. The Algonquin, New York, New York

    • Built in the most fashionable area of the city, The Algonquin opened its doors in 1902. According to the hotel's website, it attracted many great literary and theater figures over the years, such as William Faulkner and John Barrymore, as well as notable women such as Maya Angelou and Gertrude Stein. The Algonquin is the oldest operating hotel in New York City and is still a popular place to stay. Classic rooms are $269 to $599 per night and suites are $399 to $699, as of September 2010.

    The Sagamore, Bolton Landing, New York

    • The Sagamore is in Adirondack State Park on Lake George in Bolton Landing, New York. The hotel opened in 1883 and was a popular spot for wealthy clientele. Though it fell into disrepair and closed temporarily in 1981, it was remodeled and reopened two years later. Today, many activities are available on the grounds of the Sagamore, such as golfing, tennis and many other seasonal activities. Room rates range from as low as $159 a night upward to $839, as of September 2010.

    Beekman Arms, Rhinebeck, New York

    • According to The Beekman Arms' official website, this inn is the oldest continuously operated hotel in the United States. Established in 1766, the hotel sheltered some of America's revolutionaries, including George Washington and Alexander Hamilton. Over the years, many other well-known American leaders stayed at the inn, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The inn is in the picturesque Hudson Valley and many of America's great entrepreneurs built lavish mansions nearby, most of which are open for tours. Hiking, cross-country skiing and many other outdoor activities abound nearby as well. Rates range from $140 to $250 per night, as of September 2010.

    Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, New York

    • This seven-story Victorian castle hotel is in the midst of the Shawangunk Mountains and is just less than a two-hour drive from New York City. Purchased by the Smiley brothers in 1869, the family still owns the inn. According to HistoricHotels.org, the hotel has had many well-known guests, such as Andrew Carnegie and four U.S. presidents, such as Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft. Miles of hiking trails are nearby and as well as horseback riding, swimming and tennis. Spa services are also available. Rates as of September 2010 range from $275 to $740 per night for single rooms and $445 to $840 per night for a double; the rates also include meals.
