Waldo is a small town with a population of about 733 people in Waldo County, Maine. Like much of its namesake county, the town of Waldo is largely rural, with much of its area made up of farmland and forest. If you're visiting Waldo, you won't find any hotels or motels in town. However, numerous hotels are within a half hour drive in the nearby city of Belfast and the towns of Searsport and Lincolnville.
Belfast Bay is an inlet of the larger, island-dotted Penobscot Bay. In the city of Belfast, which lies about seven miles southeast of Waldo, several hotels are located right on the bay's waterfront, mostly on Route 3. These include the Belfast Harbor Inn, the Comfort Inn Ocean's Edge, Colonial Gables, the Seascape Motel and the Gull Motel. Restaurants within walking distance of all of these hotels include the Ocean's Edge, Ming's Chinese and Seng Thai Restaurant.
Downtown Belfast also boasts a number of lodging options that are convenient to the town of Waldo. These include the Belfast Bay Inn, a AAA four-diamond boutique hotel in a mid-1800s building; the Alden House Inn, built in 1840; and three bed and breakfasts: the Bellhaven Inn, the Jewelled Turret Inn and the White House Inn. All of these locations are within walking distance of the waterfront and all of downtown Belfast's shops and restaurants.
The waterside town of Searsport is just northeast of Belfast, about a 20-minute drive from Waldo. Accommodations in Searsport include the Watchtide Bed and Breakfast, located right on Penobscot Bay; the Victorian-Era Carriage House Inn, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and is well known as a "haunted hotel;" and a pair of locally owned motels, Light's Motel and the Yardarm Motel. The Penobscot Marine Museum in downtown Searsport is convenient to all of these locations.
Just south of Belfast is another waterside town, Lincolnville, which has a few accommodations that are within a half hour's drive of Waldo. These include the Ducktrap Motel, which is a five-minute walk from Penobscot Bay's Ducktrap Beach; the Spouter Inn, a waterside bed and breakfast; and Glenmoor by the Sea, which has a main hotel building as well as private cottages. All of these hotels are within a quick drive of the forested Camden Hills State Park.
