The small rural community of Rulison is in Garfield County in northwestern Colorado. The region is mountainous and popular for skiing and hiking. Project Rulison, named after the community, was a novel peacetime use of nuclear power to release natural gas from shale using an underground nuclear explosion. The gas was found to be contaminated and unmarketable. The site lies about 8 miles south of Rulison and has been the focus of extensive decontamination.
