Airports Nearest to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina

A popular location for water sports, Cape Hatteras is famous for its slow pace and relaxed atmosphere. The island has seven villages with numerous hotels and restaurants. Travel to the area is possible by car via the Bonner Bridge or by boat. There are no airports on the island, so travelers must fly into nearby airports that are between 50 and 130 miles away.

  1. Dare County Regional Airport

    • Dare County Regional Airport, located 60 miles to the north, is the closest airport to Cape Hatteras. Originally a naval air station, the airport opened to public flights in 1947. This is a county-owned public airport and no major carriers fly in or out of the facility. Most of the air traffic consists of private planes and charters.

    Norfolk International Airport

    • Norfolk International Airport is the closest full-service airport to Cape Hatteras. Located 90 miles to the north in Virginia, the airport features commercial flights from Delta, United, US Airways, Southwest and American Airlines. Numerous car rental agencies can be found on the premises, as well as restaurants and shopping.

    Pitt-Greenville Airport

    • Pitt-Greenville Airport is located 135 miles from Cape Hatteras. Renovated in 2011, the airport is mostly used for charters and general aviation but does offer commercial flights from US Airways. Car rentals, as well as taxis or limousines, are available for transport to Cape Hatteras.
