Brighton is located in East Sussex on the south coast of England. Its reputation as a fashionable seaside resort began in the late 1700s, at which point hotels were built along the seafront to accommodate the influx of vacationers. A number of these historic hotels still stand today, offering visitors elegant rooms and excellent service right on the Brighton seafront.
The De Vere Grand Hotel, commonly known as "The Grand," is an iconic Brighton landmark. Built in 1864, this Victorian building dominates the center of the seafront strip. According to the hotel's website, The Grand has featured in a number of movies and television shows and has played host to the likes of U.S. President J. F. Kennedy and British Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and Gordon Brown. The hotel was bombed by the IRA in 1984 in an attempt to assassinate Margaret Thatcher. The attempt failed, but forced the hotel to close for almost two years. Renovations were made and the hotel was restored to its former glory.
