Most cars registered in Minnesota require two license plates, which are to be displayed in the front and back of vehicles. Antique cars and dealership cars require only one rear license plate. You are not required to return license plates when you relocate to another state.
Minnesota license plates for the disabled are issued to people with a physical disability, or a custodial guardian of someone with a disability. Only one set of these plates is given to a disabled plate holder. As of December 2010, the cost of these plates is $15.00.
In Minnesota, unless you apply for special plates, you will be given standard license plates. For personalized plates on passenger vehicles, the total characters, including hyphens, must not exceed seven. There must be at least one alpha character. The initial application and filing fee, as of December 2010, is $108.50.
Antique plates are divided into four categories: classic, collector, pioneer and street rod. Specific guidelines, including the year of manufacture, must be met before receiving specialized plates. For collector and street rod plates you must have another vehicle registered in Minnesota.
