Lake Villa has been an Illinois resort town since the 1800s because it is home to nearly a dozen lakes, providing fishing, boating and swimming opportunities. The town also borders the Grant Woods Forest Preserve, which has many walking trails. Visitors have an array of resorts to choose from, whether sprawling and island-themed or small and locally owned.
Fourth Lake Resort is more than 100 years old and gets its name from the lake it sits upon. The family owned resort has eight rooms, and there is a tavern and bar on the ground level with a few rooms on the second floor and three separate cabins. Some of the rooms have community bathrooms, but the cabins have their own. The building is right on Fourth Lake and is close to restaurants and a popular fishing spot. No pets are allowed.

Key Lime Cove has restaurants, a spa and an indoor water park. The resort is in Gurnee, less than 10 minutes from Villa Lake. The Florida Keys-inspired family vacation destination has a recreation of Duval Street, with stilt walkers, parrots and street artists. Key Lime Cove also has island shops, an arcade for children and a dance club for adults, along with 414 guest suites.

Crooked Lake Resort is a small, privately owned resort in the heart of Lake Villa that is operated by a husband and wife team. It has 16 rooms, and depending on the season, the rooms were renting for as low as $100 a week in 2010. No pets are allowed, and guests must bring linens. The home has four community bathrooms, two upstairs and two downstairs. The large home sits atop a steep hill that overlooks Crooked Lake and has a staircase descending to the beach. The resort has no kitchen facilities, but it is close to many restaurants and cafes.
