Helen, Georgia was initially a small lumber outpost supplying building materials to local counties. In the early 1960s, when the logging industry began to decline, so did the local economy. Local business leaders came up with a plan to revitalize the town by recruiting local artisans to transform the small village into an "Alpine" haven giving rise to Alpine Helen. Today, the small town depicts a distinctive Alpine facade, similar to the many Alpine villages in Bavaria.
But prices are anything but small town. Expect to pay big-city prices for parking, meals, souvenirs and lodging. The town is pet- and child-friendly, offering areas with pets and children in mind. Several nearby towns such as Sautee and Nacoochee offer slightly less expensive meals as well as the Habersham Winery, the Folk Pottery Museum of North Georgia and several smaller pottery, craft, souvenir and antique shops. The area is rich in Native American history.
