Open year-round, Seven Winds RV Park (sevenwindsrvpark.com) is 3.2 miles northeast of downtown Liberal. A short drive from the RV park are Dorothy’s House and Land of Oz, local attractions inspired by the popularity of “The Wizard of Oz.” The two attractions, located on the grounds of Liberal’s Coronado Museum, figure prominently in the city’s annual Oztoberfest celebration. The park has three dozen RV sites, most with full hookups. Each site has its own picnic table. The campground also has a handful of grassy sites for tent camping. Other facilities and services include a gift shop, free continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi, a children’s playground, coin laundry, showers, restrooms, a walking trail and dump station.
Western Star RV Ranch (no website; 13916 Road 7, Liberal; 888-248-3129), 5 miles east of center-city Liberal, has more than three dozen RV sites, all with full hookups. Most sites can accommodate large rigs. Campers who are history buffs will want to visit the city’s Coronado Museum, which commemorates the Spanish explorer’s 1541 visit to the area during his search for the legendary Seven Cities of Gold. For those who’d prefer to stick closer to home base, the RV park has plenty of facilities and activities to occupy campers of all ages. These include a wheelchair-accessible recreation hall with a game room, hot tub, lending library, coin laundry, restrooms and showers, playing fields, picnic tables, walking trails, horse corrals, free Wi-Fi and propane service.
If you’re looking for a back-to-nature camping experience, consider parking your RV at Arkalon Park (no website; U.S. Highway 54 East, Liberal; 316-626-0531), a multipurpose recreation area about 13 miles northeast of Liberal. Maintained by the city, the park sits in an area of rolling hills and canyons. Within the park are multiple ponds, marshland and streams that collectively are home to a variety of wildlife, including beavers, deer, squirrels, raccoons, turtles, snakes and a wide array of birds. The park’s campground, open from early April until late October, has about three dozen sites, including some with electricity. Facilities include a bathhouse with restrooms and showers, a picnic area with covered pavilion and a dump station. Camping permits can be obtained at City Hall in Liberal.
Thirty miles west-northwest of Liberal, Eagle RV Park (eaglervparkks.com) is open year-round. The campground is in Hugoton, roughly midway between Liberal and Cimarron National Grassland, which preserves more than 100,000 acres of high plains country in its natural state. The 8-acre RV park has more than 30 sites, all with full hookups. Amenities include a clubhouse, TV lounge, coin laundry, game room, restrooms, showers, free Wi-Fi, horseshoe pits and barbecue grills.
