Four Mile Creek State Park in Niagara Falls, New York

Located on the shore of Lake Ontario just north of Niagara Falls, Four Mile Creek State Park is one of western New York's prime destinations for camping and fishing. Four Mile Creek bisects the park, and nightly sunsets are visible from the campsites, which sit atop densely wooded bluffs overlooking the lake.
  1. About the Park

    • Four Mile Creek State Park is spread across 248 acres, with a landscape that ranges from undeveloped woods and wetlands to well-groomed campsites and picnic areas. White-tailed deer live in the forest, and seagulls and great blue heron often can be seen hunting along the shoreline. Kids can spend the day enjoying the park's playgrounds and ballfields, and picnic tables, barbecue grills and by-reservation picnic shelters are available for all visitors. An on-site camp store sells ice, firewood, basic groceries and camping supplies.

    Camping

    • Overnight visitors can choose among more than 250 campsites, including both electric and nonelectric sites for tents and RVs. Campsites range from open and grassy to shady and secluded, and a handful of premium sites provide outstanding views of the lakeshore. Every site includes a picnic table and campfire ring, and campers have access to drinking-water spigots, modern restrooms, hot showers, laundry facilities and an RV dumping station.

    Fishing

    • Fishing is one of the primary attractions at Four Mile Creek State Park, as the creek hosts an annual run of steelhead. February through March offer prime fishing conditions; you can catch steelhead on flies, spawn bags and a variety of lures. A few brown trout and salmon also run upstream in fall. Besides gear, you'll need a current New York fishing license to fish in the park. Lake Ontario offers excellent fishing as well, with some of the best walleye, perch and smallmouth bass fishing in the state. Summer is prime time for bass, perch and other panfish, and outstanding walleye fishing can be found in spring and fall.

    Considerations

    • Camping is available from April to October; you can reserve a campsite by phone or through the Reserve America website. Unreserved sites may be claimed on a first-come, first-served basis, but the popularity of the park makes reservations a wise choice, especially on weekends, holidays and during the busy summer season. Four Mile Creek State Park does not have a boat ramp or designated swimming area, but the entrance pass you receive upon arrival allows you to use the beach and boat launch at nearby Tuscarora State Park free of charge.
