Fort D.A. Russell vs. Fort Concho: Texas Locations
Fort D.A. Russell was not in Marfa, Texas.
- Fort D.A. Russell – Originally in Cheyenne, Wyoming (1867); became F.E. Warren AFB. A Camp Marfa (later Fort D.A. Russell) existed in Marfa, Texas (1911–1946) for border patrol/airfield—but it was a separate, later installation.
- Fort Concho – In San Angelo, Texas (1867–1889); well-preserved National Historic Landmark; served as regimental HQ for Buffalo Soldiers.
Confusion arises from the shared name "Fort D.A. Russell" (Wyoming and Texas). The Marfa post was a cavalry/air field; Fort Concho is the famous historic site in San Angelo.
