Northern Minnesota Lake Trout Fishing Trips

Lake trout are native to Minnesota’s many clear glacial lakes of the northeastern wilderness. Active year-round, the fish average one-to-three pounds in size, but trophies of more than 20 pounds are not uncommon. Known for their beauty and tough fight, lake trout are also a popular course on many northwoods menus. Many trip options are available for anglers seeking to land lake trout in northern Minnesota. From cozy cabins to primitive wilderness adventure, a northern Minnesota lake trout trip can be an exciting experience.
  1. Gunflint Lodge

    • Set along the shores of Gunflint Lake, the Gunflint Lodge offers a variety of northwoods cabins, lake homes and cottages. Tall stands of aspen, pine and spruce surround the lake which straddles the Canadian border. The 4,000-acre lake reaches depths of 200 feet and holds an abundance of lake trout in its cold, clear waters. A 2007 Department of Natural Resources lake survey revealed an average size of nearly 6 pounds for lake trout sampled in the lake. The lodge offers special lake trout packages throughout the year that include lodging and boat usage. Ice houses are included for winter anglers. Fishing guides are also available through the lodge.
