Upper Red Lake is located within the Red Lake Indian Reservation. This lake is home to walleye, northern pike and crappie. Although summer is prime fishing time, ice fishing in winter is popular too. Its location just 75 miles from the Canadian border makes it a convenient spot for both American and Canadian fishermen. There are several full service resorts that cater to anglers in the Upper Red Lake area.

The North Shore Bay Resort is just a short drive to the west from Red Lake Bay which is located on the shores of 3,000 acre Island Lake. The resort offers six fully furnished rustic style cabins which sleep from two to 10 people each. Each cabin offers a lakeside view. North Shore Bay offers motorboat rentals for guests. Guests are also able to use paddleboats and canoes free of charge. Amenities at the North Shore Bay Resort include a children's playground, a social lounge and a game room with books, puzzles, games, a TV with VCR/DVD player, a foosball table and a mini-pool table for both kids and adults to enjoy. The resort is open year round. No pets are allowed, except during bird season.

There are 10 fully furnished cabins at the Tomahawk lodge that are available to rent year round. The Tomahawk Lodge is located on the shores of Blackduck Lake, just a short drive to the south from Upper Red Lake. Cabins have one to three bedrooms each and are available on monthly and seasonal basis for special rates. A resort lodge is on-site for guests to use and has a ping pong table, pool table, video games and a heated pool. There volleyball, basketball, shuffleboard and horseshoe courts for guests to use as well. Other amenities include a sandy beach, a fish cleaning house, picnic tables, grills and fire rings. The Tomahawk Lodge can also accommodate RV campers with 48 full hookup RV sites.
